Responsibilities in the area assigned
Obstetrics
Prepares the mother both physically and psychologically for delivery whether normal or assisted.
Ensures adequate pain assessment and intervention are carried out throughout the intrapartum period.
Provides safe and effective intrapartum care including independently conducting normal deliveries
Prepares mothers for instrumental delivery as well as elective or emergency caesarean section.
Performs immediate assessment and care of newborns upon transfer to the ward, including identification of newborn in presence of the mother (if possible)
Facilitates bonding by skin to skin contact as soon as possible after the birth.
Completes legal birth notification and records as required.
Follows correct procedure when dealing with still births and neo natal deaths, including birth notification, documentation and transfer to mortuary.
Educates patients about episiotomy care, importance of breast feeding, and postnatal exercises, if applicable.
